I'm talking specifically about connecting from a Windows box (PC or Vista) using a VNC client to a Mac that has screen sharing activated. I do this all the time and every single time, at some random moment of inactivity, the connection locks up and I have to quite the app and reconnect. This can happen anywhere from a few seconds to three or four minutes of inactivity and it's amazingly frustrating. It doesn't seem to be anything to do with the client (I've tried UltraVNC, TightVNC, and a few others) and it's not my network either as I've experienced this on other networks as well.
This is one of the few areas where Microsoft has got it right and Apple has got it dead wrong. MS's Remote Desktop Connection client for OS X is a thing of beauty. So come on, Steve, why not release Apple Remote Desktop for everyone? And better yet, release a version for Windows.
So, can anyone recommend a less painful way of remoting into a Mac from a PC? There must be a better way than this!

You could try running a different VNC server on your Mac.
Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) (free)

Vine Server has been a tried and true VNC server on Mac OS X for years.
My personal experience with the built-in Mac OS X VNC server is that it plays nice with Mac OS X Screen Sharing client, but not so well with 3rd party clients.
And the same is often true of the Mac OS X Screen Sharing VNC client, it does not always play nice with 3rd party servers. For that I like JollysFastVNC client:
